Watching the apologists defend Final Fantasy XIII after it was revealed the game literally is just a giant poorly acted cut scene is utterly hilarious. They’re actually proud of the fact that the game doesn’t let you play half the time? Really? Are they sure that they’re gamers, and not wannabe film students? Stress on wannabe.
Malstrom is finally leaving the hardcore-ridiculing business, it seems: http://seanmalstrom.wordpress.com/
I hope you don’t consider leaving Nintendo over something so petty, Jack. Please don’t!
It’s even funnier that they are celebrating the sales (at about 1.5 million); even though the first week sales are the worst since Final Fantasy VI. I would not be shocked if this game ends up selling worse than Final Fantasy V like #12 did in Japan (and that game at least grew the beard from it’s first week). Of course they will defend it by claiming that it’s good considering the install base of the PS3. Ummm; yeah sure.
Meanwhile; New Super Mario Brothers Wii sells nearly two million in three weeks and will likely be a five million seller in Japan. On second thought; Dragon Quest 10 is suddenly starting to look good already even though there is no screen shots on the game yet. And so is Dragon Quest IX too.
I just got Muramasa for Xmas. I’m not going anywhere.
I’m wondering if Sean’s I Will Buy No Wii Games Is a Poe because the post look so-hardcore-ish to me. I’m beginning to wonder if we have been played for fools by Sean and he used Nintendo (which to his credit hasn’t been studied and should have been studied.) as an excuse to strike such a martyr pose and alienate the expanded audience he so rooted for. His most recent posts have been terrible (The Wikipedia flip flop is one example of this) and this one is so petty and hypocritical (Using a comic who makes his living giving middle fingers to the general public? Really Sean?).
If this isn’t a Poe; then Sean is not a viral marketer or fanboy. He’s just an asshole using and abusing the public and striking a pose (and getting away with it because the industry is beyond forgiveness. It’s like comparing horseshit to bullshit. It’s still shit.)when called out on it. From now on; I’ll stick to the Harvard School of Business and their best-selling books directly.
To Sean: The reason those books sold so well was because the business models and way of handling customers in said books was honest and effective. That’s why your naysayers cannot strike them down as bunk. They call sell zero copies and the contents would still be true. What matters is if the contents are honest and accurate (and they are). It’s not even an entertainment book; it’s a business book. Left Behind books sold so well because it was entertaining to many people despite being the most bloodest and unadultered hate fiction in history.
@ Gregory Weagle:
Yes, because being a Christian movie based on the events depicted in the book of Revaltion automatically makes it “hate fiction”. Of course.
Back on the subject of Sean Malstrom, however:
The thing that Mal doesn’t seem to realize is that if the game industry adopts these more eco-friendly cases, then the movie industry won’t be far behind. If indeed this practice becomes widespread then how can the consumer feel he is being ripped off? For an entire industry to adopt these new cases, can they really be that shoddy? Once DVDs are packaged in eco-friendly cases everyone will get used to it except Malstrom. People don’t mind getting screwed half as much as Malstrom thinks they do. This new cases really could be quite shitty, but so was the case that Wii Sports came packaged in. In the end, very few people will care about the packaging.
@Poochy: As the proud owner of the Star Trek DVD, I can confirm this has been taken up in the movie industry as well.
The timing of the Malstrom “I’m done” email is a bit fishy too. End of year, out of left field, over a rather trivial issue that’s beyond gaming, really, now that we know it’s in movies too. Perhaps his contract is up?
@Poochy: Yes, because being a Christian movie based on the events depicted in the book of Revaltion automatically makes it “hate fiction”. Of course.
Except that I never said that Left Behind was Christian in the first place. Second; I have seen Christian media and Veggie Tales before which is completely squeaky clean. Good product too once you don’t take the references to Christ seriously. So I think you are setting up a strawman argument here which surprises me quite honestly.
There is a good reason why Left Behind: Eternal Forces got shelled by critics (besides the fact that the game’s quality wasn’t good): http://www.talk2action.org/story/2006/5/29/195855/959
Read it carefully and once you understand the intent of the creators of what Left Behind promotes; you’ll understand why I called Left Behind as such. And there is more articles on the game and the books on the site as well.
Concerning packaging: The strangest thing about it is that I see a better compromise here: I bought Disney DTVA sets recently; and they come in thinner plastic cases for each disc (about 1/3 the thickness of regular Wii cases) surrounded by a cardboard boxes. Why not just use that standard without the cardboard box? Less plastic; more strudy. Win, win. It’s not like the manual cannot fit into them either. There’s a lot of wasted space in a regular disc case.
