Is the 3DS, a portable, actually Nintendo’s next console? No, not as in the next Wii will have 3D. As in, this is where they will be putting the lion’s share of their marketing and development budgets for the next 5 years?

If it follows the recent Nintendo pattern, it’ll be Nintendo dominant for the first 2-3 years, then they’ll pull back and let 3rd parties have the run of the place. (Which they will, again, invariably screw up.)
It’s a possibility – since it seems like gaming is on the decline in Japan, but portables are still hot. Coupled with the DS being the best selling platform ever, not even the Wii’s own success could keep the temptation of a 3DS-only support at bay…
…I mean, MAYBE.
No. From a business standpoint it wouldn’t make sense to support 3DS to the point that it removes focus from the home console front.
What I do see is Nintendo utilizing the 3DS as a marketing test bed for their next home console in the same way they used the DS leading into Wii.

I’m sure that’s how Nintendo sees it as well, but let’s be realistic: 3D televisions aren’t going to take more than a while to catch on well enough to justify a 3D Nintendo console.
Considering that handhelds are the big thing in Japan (Nintendo’s home country), it is a possibility.
People keep saying that they have to release a new console soon because 3rd parties are not supporting the Wii, but they don’t seem to remember that 3rd parties NEVER supported the Wii. In fact Wii support has been steadily getting better. When was the last time the Wii got 3 high quality FPS games in 1 year?
I have no idea what Nintendo is doing, but right now I feel like they are going to focus on the 3DS and use it’s popularity to garner support for the Wii until they decide to make another console. When you think about it, Nintendo hasn’t even begun to explore all of the game possiblities with motion controls.
Industry wise, I think it is best for the Wii to last a few more years to really make the point that it’s not about bigger and better tech anymore. They need to break the cycle in order to avoid the inevitable crash the rest of the industry is heading towards.
In Nintendo’s own mind: No it’s not a console. In my mind: Considering all the features and games announced for it; it already has turned into one.
I would like to see Wii last a few more years; but 3DS is going to make that one tougher since the handheld is basically a Wii/DSi hybrid with 3D and maybe better on-line. Maybe.
MG~ I didn’t think about that…I remember when GBA was big and Square wanted to put games on it, Nintendo made them work on GameCube games as well. Sure, we got sloppy-seconds (although Crystal Chronicles was more interesting than a “real” FF at that point), but perhaps it’ll happen again in Wii/3DS?
