  1. The problem is that those games only have artificial replay value like achievements and collectibles, which 95% of people don’t care about once they’re done with the story. Adding a multiplayer mode is an easy way to up the replay value.

It’s their way of fixing an issue without actually fixing it.

  2. No; it’s because they believe that the backlash is in the majority with every game needing multiplayer. The irony is that most of the public does like single player games; they don’t like content-less bullshitting games. They misread Malstrom again which goes to prove the golden rule:

Don’t deal with absolutes; you’ll only look like a fool.

  3. I am not sure that I understand the original question (I can’t link to the original article here at work) or the replies.

I enjoyed playing NSMBWii by myself but love it even more playing with (any combination of) two of my sons and two of my daughters.

I would probably not buy the new Donkey Kong game if it were not for the multiplayer. Now it is a must buy.

My four year old wants to play Mario Kart Wii daily (we don’t let him). I couldn’t imagine it not being multiplayer.

I guess the question comes down to the word ‘useless’.

Dead Space 1/2/…99 is useless to me anyways regardless of the multi-or-lack-there-of-player.

  4. Blue, those games were designed as multiplayer titles from the very beginning. Jack is talking about games that had multiplayer tacked on just to appease the squeaky wheels.

His example is Bioshock 2. The example in the link is Dead Space 2. I’ll continue the infected sequels list and add Metroid Prime 2.

  5. Right. My see also was included to imply that but sometimes these short form blog posts aren’t very clear. “what Jim said” suffices here.
